FAQ:
(Frequently Asked Questions) For Enrolled Students
What hours are the
labs open?
Southern Wesleyan University provides five
computer labs for students using main campus facilities.
These labs house 69 computers running Windows 2000 and
Office 2000. All computers are connected to the campus
network and Internet browsing is available at all locations.
Many
hours of general use are scheduled. Labs are closed
to students during scheduled computer classes and labs.
Printing is provided as part of your technology fee. Printing
not directly associated to a course project is subject
to charges. Color scanners, digital cameras and other
devices are available to students on a limited basis.
Software installation on university owned computers is
limited to information technology employees or representatives.
Unauthorized software installation including downloading
and/or copying will result in disciplinary action.
What
electronic library resources are available?
Rickman Library
provides electronic access to the Internet, SearchBank
2000, and S.O.A.R., the university catalog system. Sixty
percent of the university volumes are available via S.O.A.R,
the university automated catalog system. SearchBank 2000
provides SWU students access to numerous on-line periodicals
and other on-line reference tools like Grolier and SIRS.
Six additional computers are available to students using
library resources. Laptops are available for students
and checkout is handled through the circulation desk of
the library.
How do I
connect my computer to the campus network and the Internet?
The university provides each resident student a connection
to the campus network. Therefore, a
minimum computer configuration is required. We
cannot guarantee that all computers will be successfully
connected to the campus network. A 10/100 Ethernet card
is required. This card may be purchased from and installed
by the university for $40.00. Every resident student will
pay a one-time Internet connection fee of $40.00. We strongly
recommend recording the serial number, model number and
description of all electronic equipment before bringing
to campus. The information technology department periodically
monitors students Internet and campus network activity
both in the labs and the resident facilities. Inappropriate
use of these resources, as defined in the acceptable
use policies, will result in loss of lab privileges,
disconnection from the campus network and disciplinary
action. It is necessary to schedule an appointment with
the Information Technology Department during the first
week of each semester to connect computers to the campus
network. (click

How
do I activate my telephone service?
Local telephone service is provided to all resident students
and is live at check-in. Students are required to use
the university-supplied digital telephone when connecting
telephone service. The telephone port in most rooms is
identified by a gray receptacle. Each number is accessible
via direct inward dialing. (864-644-xxxx.) Dialing the
last four digits of the telephone number will complete
inter-campus calls. Calls cannot be transferred to a students
room using the university toll-free numbers or the main
university number. A student directory is available by
dialing 864-644-7999. Telephone security deposits are
part of the room deposit. Telephone replacement due to
abuse or breakage is $175.00. Students in Stuart-Bennett
will share a telephone number with a roommate.
How do
I dial long distance?
The university provides long distance service at a rate
of 10 cents per minute within the continental united states.
International calling is not offered through the university
however, international calling cards are available in
the university bookstore. Long distance account codes
will be issued with an approved application. Students
are allowed to use pre-paid phone cards but cannot use
services that like 10-10-220. Students in Stuart-Bennett
will share only a telephone number with a roommate. Long
distance codes and v-mail accounts are issued individually.
Dial account code + 9 + 1+ area code + number.
How do
I setup my voice mail?
Voice mail service is provided to each resident student.
Each student must properly activate the voice mail service
by recording a greeting, setting a password and recording
their name according to the instructions provided. Students
should call the IT help desk for assistance on setting
up voice mail or consult with a resident assistant. Instructions
are available on-line.
What cable TV
channels do I receive?
Cable TV is provided at no additional cost to each resident
and is available in the lobbies of most campus buildings.
The university has selected a 47-channel
line up and has filtered some channels that we feel are
inappropriate for viewing. Students are not permitted
to purchase pay-per-view movies or events or in any way
change the filtering or delivery of these channels. The
university provides an information channel (26) that broadcasts
campus information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
