What
computer resources will be available to me as a student?
Southern Wesleyan University provides five
computer labs for students using main campus facilities.
These labs house 69 computers running Windows 2000 and
Office 2000. All computers are connected to the campus
network and Internet browsing is available at all locations.
Many
hours of general use are scheduled. Labs are closed
to students during scheduled computer classes and labs.
Printing is provided as part of your technology fee. Printing
not directly associated to a course project is subject
to charges. Color scanners, digital cameras and other
devices are available to students on a limited basis.
Software installation on university owned computers is
limited to information technology employees or representatives.
Unauthorized software installation including downloading
and/or copying will result in disciplinary action.
What electronic
library resources are available?
Rickman Library
provides electronic access to the Internet, SearchBank
2000, and S.O.A.R., the university catalog system. Sixty
percent of the university volumes are available via S.O.A.R,
the university automated catalog system. SearchBank 2000
provides SWU students access to numerous on-line periodicals
and other on-line reference tools like Grolier and SIRS.
Six additional computers are available to students using
library resources. Laptops are available for students
and checkout is handled through the circulation desk of
the library.
Should I bring
a personal computer with me to school?
The university makes every effort to maintain a 1:10 computer
to student ratio. Most students are completely satisfied
with the computer resources provided. However, some students
find it more convenient to own their own personal computer.
The university has provided a small lab in Stuart-Bennett
Hall and Childs Hall to allow students the ability to
work on projects after the labs have closed or before
the labs open. It is strongly recommended that students
install university-approved
software on personally owned computers to lessen
the possibility of compatibility problems when transferring
files to university-owned PCs and printing on university-provided
printers.
Will I have
access to the Internet and the campus network?
The university provides each resident student a connection
to the campus network. Therefore, a
minimum computer configuration is required. We
cannot guarantee that all computers will be successfully
connected to the campus network. A 10/100 Ethernet card
is required. This card may be purchased from and installed
by the university for $40.00. Every resident student will
pay a one-time Internet connection fee of $40.00. We strongly
recommend recording the serial number, model number and
description of all electronic equipment before bringing
to campus. The information technology department periodically
monitors students Internet and campus network activity
both in the labs and the resident facilities. Inappropriate
use of these resources, as defined in the acceptable
use policies, will result in loss of lab privileges,
disconnection from the campus network and disciplinary
action.
Will I
have telephone service in my room?
Local
telephone service is provided to all resident
students through the university telephone system. Each
number is accessible via direct inward dialing. Calls
cannot be transferred to a students room using the
university toll-free numbers or the main university number.
Students are required to use a university-supplied telephone
when connecting to the university telephone system. Telephone
security deposits are part of the room deposit. Telephone
replacement due to abuse is $175.00. Students in Stuart-Bennett
will share a telephone number with a roommate.
What
long distance services are available?
The university provides long
distance service at a rate of 10 cents per minute
within the continental united states. Long distance account
codes will be issued with an approved application. Students
are allowed to use pre-paid phone cards but cannot use
services that require connection to a long distance platform
using procedures other than a toll-free number. (10-10-220
for example) Voice mail, caller ID, call waiting and call
area plus are provided to resident students. Students
in Stuart-Bennett will share only a telephone number with
a roommate. Long distance codes and v-mail accounts are
issued individually. (click
here for billing info.)
Will I have cable
TV service in my room?
Cable TV is provided at no additional cost to each resident
and is available in the lobbies of most campus buildings.
The university has selected a 47-channel
line up and has filtered some channels that we
feel are inappropriate for viewing. Students are not permitted
to purchase pay-per-view movies or events or in any way
change the filtering or delivery of these channels. The
university provides an information channel (26) that broadcasts
campus information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Can
I purchase textbooks and general merchandise on-line?
Purchasing items from the university bookstore is available
through the Internet at bookstore.swu.edu.
Textbooks are listed by course, section and term. Purchases
can be made with a Visa or Master Card and delivered
to your home or picked up at the main counter of the
bookstore. General merchandise can also be purchased
in a similar manner. Look for care package offerings
during holidays and special campus event days.
What
technology-related fees will I pay?
There are basically three technology fees that students
are subject to pay.
Technology
Fee - The technology fee is assessed to all
full-time students at a rate of $100.00 per semester.
Payment of the fee permits enrolled students to freely
use technology resources like software, computer labs,
general use computers in the resident halls and library,
network resources, network printers, scanners, on-line
library resources and other campus technology services
and supplies without incurring per use charges. Also
covered are student assistants and information technology
staff to support students using these resources.
Computer
Lab Fees Computer courses, generally
speaking, require more technology resources and supplies
to complete class projects. This fee covers additional
software, hardware and printing supplies necessary to
support these classes.
Network
Installation Fee Information Technology
requires a specific network configuration when connecting
to our network and in order for us to properly monitor
and maintain our resources it is necessary for us to
personally configure each system the first time the
unit is placed on our network. Students are not permitted
to change the configuration and will be subject to disconnection
if tampering is discovered. We therefore, charge a $40.00
one-time connection fee to cover the cost of this service.
Included in the cost is technical support for the network
configuration of the configured computer. Network cards
may be purchased from our department for $40.00 and
installed by IT staff. Included in the cost is technical
support and replacement in the event the card is damaged
due to power surges or lightening damage. We are not
responsible for damage to other components unless damage
is the result of a technicians error.
